And from where I popped up to this band!? Well, I’ll come back later to that . . .Right in the beginning of 80’s when I got my first electric guitar, the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE showed Status Quo show from television and it really paid my tension. High energy rock’n'roll and good looking performance indeed . These’s guys rocks !
In this same era I recorded Quo album “Never Too Late” from friend of mine to c-cassette. I didn’t listened this album too much , but song Carol was absolutely my favourite and that’s the one I listened hec a lot . It really kicked my ass! Now my Quo seed was strewed.
Then I started to listen bands like Iron Maiden , Accept , Judas Priest , Helloween etc… These are the ones which really affected me a lot. And still does. And I guess the reason as well why I founded Kilpi (www.kilpi.com) some years ago.
But back to the basics. During the years even though I played and did whole different kind of music and things, I’ve been always quite aware where Quo were going and what kind of stuff they’ve been publishing etc. If I somewhere saw their show from television or DVD or something, I always nailed to stare it intently . So, it’s quite sure there’s something in this band which affected me deeply and I just like it a lot ! So “feeling good” stuff !!!! It’s always feels so good to see people smiling. There’s so much shit stuff in this world in generally, and this kind of positive energy directly from hearts impressed me a lot.
In 2005 I met Toni “Löysä” Lehtonen, the drummer of this our Status Quo Tribute band. I knew Löysä already from longer period because of some another connections. He asked me to play guitar to one of his cover band as a deputy because their guitarist were on holiday or something. I told him I’m not interested, but if there’s some open jobs in his Status Quo Tribute band I will be very interested indeed. Some months later Löysä asked me did I said that thing seriously about possible joining to SQT and I shout of course I am serious for God sake. But I said I do not want to play guitar solos at all. Only rhythm guitar and backing vocals like Rick Parfitt does. It was more than fine because Sami knows all the Rossi stuff and play them extremely great and he’s a lead singer as well. I have always been fascinated about Rick Parfitt. He’s the greatest rhythm guitarist in the world, together with Malcom Young.
Guys gave me the set-list they normally played in SQT gigs and I started to do home works. I really wanted this post and I practised a lot at home. After some weeks Sami , Jan and Löysä asked me into their rehearsal room as a “test-trial”. It was Thursday. And on Friday I played the first gig with these guys. And on Saturday the second one. So I guess home works were done ok. In addition the chemistry felt to be fine with all four of us so what a hell , let’s hit the road. Later on Monday I went to the music store and ordered white Fender Telecaster with black pickguard and rosewood neck
Shortly it went this way ! Keep On Rockin’. . .
